VICTORIA DOCK
Including Custom House and Silvertown
Victoria Docks is a group of 19th century parishes serving the area
around the Royal Victoria and Royal Albert Docks.
Custom House, situated about 4 miles east of Whitechapel, is a district
of the modern day borough of Newham and gets its name from the custom house which stood on
the north side of Victoria Dock. It was developed from about 1880 as a working-class
residential area and badly damaged during the 2nd World War.
Silvertown is situated about 4½ miles east of Whitechapel, south of
the Royal Victoria and Albert Docks. It is an industrial and residential district first
developed about 1850's round the rubber and telegraph works of S.W. Silver and Company -
hence the name. It gradually extended along the Thames with an oil refinery, factories and
engineering and chemical works. The great 'Silvertown Explosion' occured here in 1917 when
about 50 tons of TNT exploded at Brunner Mond's chemical works at West Silvertown.
