STOKE NEWINGTON
Stoke Newington is situated about 3 miles north of the
City on the Roman road to York. Although the Saxon's built a village here (the name
meaning 'new town in the wood'), evidence has been found of settlements dating back to the
palaeolithic era.
From the 17th century, the village became affected by the expansion of
London. At first as a refuge for Dissenters, who were not allowed to live in the City, and
then in the 18th century by the building of nonconformist meeting houses and chapels.
Daniel Defoe is probably the most famous of its inhabitants at this time. It continued to
grow, with the medieval half-timbered houses being replaced by grand houses of red brick,
and by the end of the 19th century most of the remaining open land had been built on with
more modest houses built with locally made yellow brick.
The church of St. Mary is situated in the old village street, set in a
picturesque churchyard with 18th century tombstones, and surrounded by a collection of
interesting and varied 18th century buildings.
