HOMERTON
Homerton is situated west of the River Lea between
Lower Clapton and Hackney Marshes, about 3 miles from Whitechapel. The hamlet developed
gradually and by the 18th century housed the Hackney Union Workhouse, surrounded by
fields, nurseries and market gardens.
The church of St. Barnabas, built by Arthur Ashpital, was consecrated
in 1847 and in 1885 the separate parish of St. Paul was formed.
By the beginning of the 20th century building development had made
Homerton an extension of Hackney and in 1965 became part of the Borough of Hackney.
