CLAPTON
Clapton, originally in the County of Middlesex and in
the parish of Hackney, is situated about 4 miles north of Whitechapel on ground rising
west of the river Lea. The land was mainly agricultural when St. Thomas's was built in
1773 and supplied much of London's bread, but by the end of the 19th century had developed
so much that only one strip of open land survived - Clapton Common.
