BETHNAL GREEN
St. John on Bethnal
from an original photograph by Kathleen Andersen
St John on Bethnal Green was built in 1826-1828 to a design by Sir John Soane
and was extensively repaired in 1871 after a fire. It was formed from part of the parish
of St Matthew's, Bethnal Green when the area grew in population.
It is situated on one corner of the major crossroads at Bethnal Green
Road/Roman Road and Cambridge Heath Road. It was in the Bethnal Green Registration
District and, in 1965, became part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
The Church has had a new roof
in recent times to ensure further deterioration while fundraising to restore
the West Front.
The parish registers are at the London Metropolitan Archives and the
dates available are:
Baptisms 1837-1931
Banns - dates unknown
Marriages 1837-1958
Burials 1847-1855
No funerals and there are no gravestones in the churchyard.
Baptisms from 1931 and marriages from 1958 are with the incumbent vicar of St Matthew's,
Bethnal Green.
The Church has the registers of St Peter’s
and St Bartholomew’s Bethnal Green that have not been deposited at the
archives.
