BETHNAL GREEN

St. James the Great
from an original photograph by Kathleen Andersen
St James the Great was completed in 1844 and was formed from part of
the parish of St Matthew's, Bethnal Green. During the 1990s it was deconsecrated and has
since been remodelled into flats (apartments).
It is situated on the busy Bethnal Green Road and has no surrounding
churchyard or garden - it's right out there on a street corner! It was in the Bethnal
Green Registration District and, in 1965, became part of the London Borough of Tower
Hamlets.
The parish registers are at the London Metropolitan Archives and the
dates available are:
Baptisms 1844-1965
Marriages 1844-1943
No funerals and there are no gravestones and no churchyard.
Baptisms from 1965 and marriages from 1943 are with the incumbent vicar of St Matthew's,
Bethnal Green.
