LOCATION
CODES Some of the search results
include 2 or 3 letters for Location. These abbreviations are a combination
of:
- Chapman Codes for UK & Ireland,
Australia & Canada
- Postal Codes for US
- ISO (International Organisation for
Standardisation) Country codes
These codes are used widely in genealogical
sites in an attempt to standardise the information. Some county and state
codes may be obvious i.e. ESS = Essex, MDX = Middlesex. Country codes for
Members in
the EoLFHS database include ZAF and IDN. To identify a code use the Lookup Search

INTERNATIONAL
CODES
US State and Canadian Province codes are based on Postal codes
i.e. IN = Indiana, TX = Texas, BC = British Columbia, ACT = Australia
Capital Territory etc. You can browse the set of Codes which have been
included in the EoLFHS database

WHY HAVE THE CODES
BEEN USED?
The Codes have been included to enable quick and accurate searching in the
database where the search process is looking for an exact match.
Leicestershire, for example, could be written in full or abbreviated to
Leics, shortened to Leicester; but by using the Chapman Code of LEI covers
all possibilities.
HOW CAN IT HELP
ME?
EoLFHS has members from all over the world. Location information is
provided on the Members' contact details to enable other researchers to
identify where they live and making communication easier between
researchers. One of the searches, for example, allows you to see who lives
nearby - select a country, a county or state and you may find somebody
within the same area. Networking between nearby members may help with
their research.
The Codes are frequently used in newsgroups
and surname lists. You may be required to enter a code when you submit
your information to such a list.
