OF ESSEX RELATED DEAD OF WORLD WAR II (ROERDOWW2)
UPDATE 13
Jun 2002
Richard Goring:
I have now updated the on-line name index, which as of yesterday has
9.010 entries. Again, almost all the new names are civilian air raid
victims, many from the western side of the old County, in areas that fall
within or are adjacent to EoLFHS territory - such as Barking, Dagenham,
Hornchurch, Chingford and Chigwell."
UPDATE 1 Dec
2001
Richard Goring: "I have today
updated the on-line name index, now
includes the civilian air raid casualties from East Ham and West Ham County
Boroughs (so all the 'little districts' such as Manor Park, Custom House,
Forest Gate, etc. are in there), plus Barking Borough. That has added
about 2,000 names and the on-line index now has 8,149 entries (including a
small number of aliases and probable duplicates, but there should certainly
be more than 8,000 individuals there)."
A database - still far from complete but
continually enlarging - of people whose death was attributable to the Second World War and
who have some kind of connection with the county of Essex. It includes British,
Commonwealth, other allied and even axis servicemen and women, merchant marine and
civilian air raid victims and internees. 'Essex' means the old county east of the
River Lea, so includes much EoLFHS territory (and skies above and
coastal waters). 'Related' means a connection by virtue of birth, death or
burial, residence, education or employment at any time in Essex, service in the Essex
Regiment or units derived from the Regiment and Essex Yeomanry, last flight/voyage from an
Essex base, and any other 'connection' I consider acceptable.
There is a regularly updated index of names,
ranks and death dates on my website (homepage
www.goring1941.freeserve.co.uk).
Find an entry (or several) of interest and e-mail me at
richard@goring1941.freeserve.co.uk
for the full database record. Records vary between just a name on a war memorial to
considerable detail of next-of-kin, pre-war education and employment, circumstances of
death, etc.
There's no charge for the service (but
donations to support the work are welcome!). Information input is very welcome - as
this is written in Oct 2001 I have just begun inputting East and West Ham civilian air
raid victims and need details of 'incidents', burial places, etc. to flesh them out, along
with any service personnel casualties in YOUR family.
