ARCHIVE CDBOOKS PROJECT by Guy Etchells

I am sure you have all noticed, when browsing the shelves of archives over the years the condition of many of the books is deteriorating and know that unfortunately the archives do not have funds to renovate those books and so eventually have to withdraw them from the public shelves, now there is a project set up to try to remedy this situation Archive CD Books.

Archive CD Books is a Not For Profit project set up by Rod Neep, roughly two years ago, to scan out of print books and make them available to everyone and at the same time aid archives by paying to have their books renovated.

How does it work?

Essentially, the old books are lent to the project by individuals, archives and libraries, Rod buys books too, which are usually given away (to organisations who lend books) when the project has finished with them. Believing in value for money, the CD books are sold at a very reasonable price. Folks like that. Funds from the proceeds of CD sales buy more books for the project, or pay for books loaned by County Record Offices, museums, local studies libraries, museums, etc. to be renovated.

Additionally all who lend books also receive a CD copy of the book lent in this way everyone benefits, the archives benefit, the public benefit and the project grows

This has proved so popular that form a start with the Nottingham Date Book, a book that was withdrawn from the shelves of the Nottingham Archives due to its poor condition, but now restored thanks to the project, to a current catalogue of over 787 books. This is made up of books lent by various archives, including the PRO and the Harleian Society, University Libraries, Individuals and books purchased.
