Q1: What area does the East of London FHS cover.

Q2: What is the difference between the City of London, Metropolitan London and Greater London?

Q3: Where is the town of North Woolwich situated, Kent or Essex?

Q1: What area does the East of London FHS cover.

A1: The organisers of the society have very carefully researched and listed the towns within the society's boundaries

Q2: What is the difference between the City of London, Metropolitan London and Greater London?

A2: The term City of London, or the City, is applied only to a small area (1 sq. mile) that was the original settlement (ancient Londinium) and is now part of the business and financial district of the metropolis.

The City of London and 32 surrounding boroughs form the Greater London metropolitan area, which covers 620 sq. miles. The 13 inner boroughs are Camden, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth, and the City of Westminster. The 19 outer boroughs are Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield, Greenwich, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton, and Waltham Forest.

The highlighted boroughs are covered by the EoLFHS. For more information see Q1.

Q3: Where is the town of North Woolwich situated, Kent or Essex ?

A3: The EoLFHS area includes a location which was once in Kent.

North Woolwich, although on the north bank of the Thames, was formerly part of the parish of St. Mary Magdelene, Woolwich, in Kent. However, in 1864 it was detached from the south to form St. Mark, Victoria Docks ecclesiastical (but not civil) parish with parts of two Essex parishes, creating a parish in two counties. In 1875 it was transferred again to the new (ecclesiastical) parish of St. Luke, Victoria Docks. In 1877 it was transferred yet again, to the new ecclesiastical parish of North Woolwich. A small part of North Woolwich (this included part of the parish of St. John the Evangelist) was still in Kent up to 1965 when it was transferred to the newly formed London Borough of Newham, part of Greater London.

Woolwich is situated south of the river Thames and although now part of Greater London was always in the county of Kent.
