FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - SURNAME QUERIES

The questions below are typical of the sort of queries received from members. To view the response to a FAQ, click the Q number.

Q1: I am researching the name SMITH who lived in Poplar in the 1850s (or substitute your own variants). Can you send me any information?

Q2: I have an extensive genealogy of my family in Virginia from the 1700s (or substitute your own variants). I know they came from the UK but I don't know where. Can you help me?

Q3: I have searched the EoLFHS list of surnames and have found a match. How do I contact the person who submitted that surname?

Q4: How do I find the submitter's address for the EoLFHS surnames entries?

Q5: I don't know the town name within the FHS for my surname. There is no pop-up menu for "unknown" or "any".

Q6: How long will my surnames stay on the on-line list?

Q7: What if I cannot contact a submitter?

Q8: What if I would like to have my surnames and my name and e-mail address removed from the list?


AQ1: The Society is unable to peform research for individuals. Facilities offered here on the website however should give you some help in contacting other researchers of particular surnames in the Society's area.


AQ2: The Society is unable to peform research for individuals however there is an extensive range of publications on sale by the Society which may enable you to invetigate whether your ancestors may have come from the Society's area.

There are many internet sites available now to also help your research. See the links HERE


AQ3: The Surnames pages are now generated from entries held in a central database. As you view any of the Surnames in the list you will see a link to the Member's membership number. Click on this hyperlink to see the contact information for that Member. Remember, however, that not all members have chosen to include their surnames interests on line. See the information in your Society magazine on how to contact any Society member.


AQ4: (Also see AQ3 above). The online database does not include member's postal mail address. The only way to contact these members is by email.


AQ5: The Online Surnames submission form includes an option to select all towns in any one borough. To see the full list of towns and their boroughs click HERE


AQ6: Surnames will only be removed once a member ceases membership.


AQ7: If the email contact address is invalid, inform the chairman


AQ8: Send an email to the webmaster requesting removal of your Member Online and Surname Entries
