Please be aware that although there is a statutory fee for a certificate, some Register Offices may have additional administrative production charges depending on when the certificate is required.

You are advised to consult the appropriate office in each case.

Most offices will take credit/debit card applications over the phone.

When applying to a local office, please be aware that reference and volume page found in the General Register Office (GRO) indexes (e.g. 4a 365) are useless to them.

They do need the Year, Quarter and Registration District of the Event taken from the Registrar Generals Indexes

Please remember that most offices are staffed by a small number of people whose main responsibility is to register current events. Offices will therefore not be able to undertake protracted family history research with little facts.

Alternatively you can apply to the General Register Office at www.direct.gov.uk or www.gro.gov.uk quoting the reference found in the GRO Indexes.
