The
Meeting
We hope to welcome as many members as
possible to our Annual General Meeting, hosted by the Havering
Branch. It is not often that we meet as one group, rather than in our
separate Branches.
The guest society will be Barking
Photographic.
Brian & Margaret Tester will have an excellent selection of Xmas Cards
etc, made from their original photographs such as St Margarets
Church and the Curfew Tower.
There is no need to book in advance, nor is
there any charge to members for attending the associated talks. We hope that you will enjoy the
two speakers that we have arranged.

Barking Abbey School was formed in 1970
when the grammar school of the same name was merged with Park Modern
School. It is on two sites, one in Longbridge Road and the other in
Sandringham Road: our AGM is being held at the latter. The school's name
is taken from the Abbey which was founded in AD 666 by St. Erkenwald for
his sister St. Ethelburga, the first Abbess. Later Abbesses included two
more saints, three queens and two princesses: William the Conqueror stayed
there after his coronation. However, this illustrious history did not
prevent it being dissolved by Henry the Eighth. It was demolished and now
only ruins can be seen at the site near the town centre.
In the grounds of the ruins can be seen the
church of St. Margaret of Antioch, where Captain James Cook, the explorer,
married Elizabeth Batts, a Barking girl, on the 21st December 1762.
